Skin Tone Event
The purpose of this event was to join together as a school community, recognize our racial identities and love our beautiful skin tones. We are not just black, brown, or white. We are each made up of a unique combination of colors. We have complex backgrounds, stories, and culture.
3rd and 4th grade art electives learned about skin color, race, and identity. Students began by critically analyzing art-making supplies and products that intend to be representative of skin color. Students then discovered that many of the products do not match our skin colors and are exclusive. The unit concluded with students using paint to mix their own unique skin tones and writing poems about those skin colors. Additionally students wrote letters to Crayola or Band-Aid voicing their opinions of their products and calling for a more expansive range of colors.
